An
Undiscovered Gem of Our College: I had the privilege to visit Mar Thoma College for Women in April, 2001 at the invitation of Dr. Rajan Varughese, Principal. Dr. Rajan also took me around and introduced the faculty who were present. I also had a tour of the college. I was very impressed with display of creations of the students from the Creative art of Home Management Course. Mrs. Latha Prem Kumari of the English Department and Mrs. Ivy Paul, the librarian of the college, deserve special recognition in this area. They are very talented. Their gift of a flower bouquet to me is displayed prominently in my house and is often the topic of conversation when guests come to our home. I am still amazed at the workmanship and creativity employed in developing this project. It is important that we offer opportunities for a well rounded education to our younger generation. Developing the creative talents of our students are very important. In these days of giving notes, learning the notes by heart, and reproducing the notes in the answer book in the examination, the students do not have much opportunity to apply their creativity and individual talents. This may be the single most shortcoming of the educational system in India as compared to that in the Western countries. We emphasize discipline and conformance. Not much opportunity is given to showcase individual talents of the students. Courses such as I hope that we recognize this hidden gem of the college and recognize the hard work and talents of the leaders of the course. |
