Guruvayoor on 9 August, 2002 to help them prepare for the assessment and accreditation by NAAC.
IIeLT Obtains Provisional Accreditation
It is a great day for Mar Thoma College for Women.
The DOEACC Society of the Department of Information Technology, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology issued the provisional accreditation for our IIeLT (Institute of Information and e-Learning Technology) for conduct of courses that will help the
students to appear for the 'O' level examination of the DOEACC Society.
Provisional Accreditation No. PROV 01172 dt.6 July, 2002.
The IIeLT is now getting ready for the 'A' level accreditation by the
same Society.
We congratulate all the faculty, staff, and students for this recognition. A special thanks goes to Dr. Rajan Varughese, our Principal, who has expertly guided us through this process.

Speak at College
Dr. Shila Mathew, MD and Ms. Seena Mathew, BA (Neuroscience) visited the college on June 25 at the invitation of Dr. Rajan Varughese, our principal. Dr. Mathew is the cofounder and Medical Director of
Holisticonline.com, the award winning
health website that now reaches over 170 countries and receives
over 1 million hits a week. She is a board certified psychiatrist with Kaiser Permanente Health Plan, one of the largest HMO's in the USA. Seena Mathew had just graduated from Kenyon College, one of the only three students to graduate from this prestigious college this year in Neuroscience. (Kenyon College is often described as "the Harvard of the Midwest.") Seena will be continuing her postgraduate education towards a doctorate in neuroscience.
While at the college, Seena held an interactive session with the students of the college about the educational system in the USA. Dr. Mathew gave a talk about the health related issues facing young people with special emphasis on eating disorders, a subject that is of great interest to the college community. They
also toured the college, visited the library and met with several faculty and staff members and expressed their appreciation for the dedication and zeal shown by the college community to bring higher education to those in need in this part of Kerala.
The Mar Thoma
Sevika Sangom Donates Rs. 75,000 for Library Development
The Mar Thoma Sevika Sangom
(Ernakulam Centre) donated
Rs.75,000, the amount they have collected for the Library development of the college,
at a function in the college on 19 June, 2002. Rt. Rev. Dr. Thomas Mar Thimothios Episcopa, the Bishop of the Malabar
Kunnamkulam Diocese, received the gift on behalf of the College.
Rev.Joseph Ayrookuzhi, President of the Centre Sevika Sangom handed
over the gift. Sevika Sangom Secretary Mrs. Anu Mathew and all the Executive Committee members of the
Centre were also present at the function. (See photo above.)
This fund raising was initiated by Rev. Johnson Varghese while he was the President of the Centre during 2000-2001. Mrs.Remani Johnson was
the Secretary during the period of fund raising.

College Getting Assistance from MTEA for Construction Projects
The Mar Thoma Evangelic Association (MTEA) has resolved to assist in the construction of a building to house the Off-Campus Academic Centre by advancing the necessary funds.

PTA Funds A Study to Assess The Readiness for
NAAC.
The management of the college has decided to go in for a self study to make the college ready for the assessment and accreditation by the NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council). The self study work is in progress. This ongoing study has helped us to understand our strengths and weaknesses. The Report will finally be submitted to the NAAC by June - July, 2002. The fee for accreditation Rs.50,000 came as a gift from the PTA. Some more assistance to the tune of Rs.50,000 more also was gifted by the PTA for the preparations, maintenance, etc. of the college in connection with the NAAC accreditation.

Lisy Cherian Place in "A" Grade after NCC Training
2/Lt. Lisy Cherian was Commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the Senior Wing NCC from October 2001. She was adjudged fifth position in the All India Pre Commission Training at NCC Officers Training College, Gwallior and was placed in the 'A' Grade.

Mrs. Lally Mathew, Bursar and HOD Economics attended a two day workshop organised by the Kerala Higher Education Trust jointly with the AIACHE on 'Strategies for Fund Raising' (23 and 24 May, 2002).
Dr. Rajan Varughese, Principal, has attended a national workshop from 28 to 30 April, 2002 on "Information Technology for Educational Administrators in Higher Education at Christ College, Bangalore, organised jointly by the AIACHE and
UBCHEA.
Dr. Rajan Varughese, Principal, was invited to hold a session of 3 hours on 'motivation and winning spree' for 30 top ranking Conservators and Chief Conservators of the Kerala State Forest Department on 7 May, 2002. Judging from the feedback from attendees, the program was a success. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests
Mr. Surendran Achari expressed his happiness and satisfaction after
attending the sessions.
Dr. Rajan Varughese was named a resource person for the 'training of new Principals' - a national program organised by the AIACHE at Kristu Jyothi College, Bangalore from 9 to 19 May, 2002 on administration of colleges - a program headed by Dr. M. V. Pylee, former VC, Cochin University.
Dr.Thomas Abraham, former faculty member of
Columbia University in the
City of New York, Assistant Professor, Attending Physician at Harlem Hospital, Columbia University - for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation visited the college. Dr.
Abraham is an old Student of Asram High School. He is a member of the Mar Thoma Sabha Council. He visited the Jubilee Home where he was a boarder. The building is now the hostel for girls.
Dr. Abraham has shown interest in the IT related projects in the college.

Receives Gift of Books
When Dr. Jacob Mathew
visited the college last year at the invitation of Dr. Rajan
Varughese, he was very impressed with the quality of the programs
of the college. However, he was also concerned about the lack of
books on general information that the students can use. He
promised that he will acquire and send some books after his return
to the USA. In September 2001, the college received about 100
books from Dr. Mathew. This included several books on arts,
crafts, flower decoration etc. for use in the college Creative art of Home Management
Course. The teachers of the college have found the
titles very useful. The college expresses our heartfelt thanks for the gift
from Dr. Mathew.
Intel
Names IIeLT as one of the Best
Intel Asia Electronics Inc. has identified the IIeLT computer Laboratory
as one of the best labs in Ernakulam District and has signed a MOU with the
college to conduct training programmes in the college for School and College
Teachers of the Intel's 'Teach to the Future'.

Construction of Canteen Building Underway
The construction work of the Canteen Building was inaugurated by
Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius, Manager of the College, on Friday 15 March, 2002, (9.30 am).
In a simple function, thirumeni asked for blessings and led the college community in prayer.
Lecture on Women Empowerment
The second lecture in the series on the issues related to women
empowerment was given by Mrs. Rachel Mathew on Friday, February, 15, 2002.
Mrs. Rachel Mathew is
the former General Secretary of the Mar Thoma Sevika Sangam and the former lady member who represented the Mar Thoma Syrian Church in the World Council of
Churches (WCC). She talked about socio-cultural dimension of
women empowerment. The first lecture on the series featured Rev.
K. S. Mathew, Vicar, Salem Mar Thoma Church, who presented the biblical context.

The Valedictory function of the college union and the college day
was celebrated on 27 February. Dr. N. Ravindranath, Pro Vice Chancellor,
M. G. University was the Chief Guest. Prof. C. C. Jacob, Member, Syndicate of the
M. G. University addressed the meeting and give away the prizes.
Dr. K. S. Pathumma Beevi, Member, Syndicate of M. G. University, also
Selection Grade Lecturer in Sanskrit at Sanskrit College,
Tripunithura was also present.
Dr. Rajan Varughese, Principal, attended a National Workshop on "Teaching -The Distance
Approach," a program organised by the School of Distance Education, MG University with the support of the Distance Education Council of the Indira Gandhi National Open University
(IGNOU) New Delhi, from 11 to 13 February, 2002.
He also gave the Presidential address at the 49th Founders' Day and Mar
Athanasius Memorial Day function at MA College Kothamangalam on 25
January, 2002. Dr. M. V. Pylee, former VC, Cochin University delivered the memorial address.
The alumni day of Mar Thoma College for Women
was celebrated on 26 January,
2002 along with the Republic Day Celebrations.
On January 25th and 26th, an exhibition of the artistic work of the students
of the 'Creative art of Home Management
Course' was held in the college. See also the article: An

The library shift is planned for the month of February. An
in-house developed software with limited facilities is getting final shapes.
The data entry of books in the library is over. We wish to have the semi
automated library to start functioning in the new premises.
The Intel 'Teach to the Future' program for 14 teachers of the Perumbavoor area
was inaugurated by
Adv. P. N. Arun Kumar, Vice Chairman of the Perumbavoor Municipal Council.
The Presidential address was given by the Municipal
Councilor Mr. Babu John on 9 January, 2002.
Rev. K. S. Mathew, Vicar, Salem Mar Thoma Church, Ernakulam
inaugurated the series of lectures on Women Empowerment on 16 January,
2002 with an inspiring talk on women empowerment in the Kerala context.
Artists Mr. Istevan and
Mrs. Gabriela from Budapest, Hungary, Europe conducted a musical concert in the college on 17 January, 2002.
A Cultural show consisting of Eastern Classical Dance forms, Bharatha Natyam, Mohini Attam, Kathakali, and Koodi Attam is being organized as a Fund raising programme
to support the
completion of construction of the College Building. The date of
this event is unknown at this time.

Ernakulam District Convention of the Joint Ecological Convention
The college hosted the Ernakulam District Convention of the Joint
Ecological Convention sponsored by the Kerala Council of Churches (KCC) and Nilakkal
Ecumenical Committee on 29 September, 2001. The convention was inaugurated by
H. G. Dr.T homas Mar Athanasius, former President of the KCC. Rev. Joseph
Mathew presented a
paper on Ecology and Religion. Prof. K. P. Joy addressed the Ecological Problems of the

NSS Service Camp Builds

Conducts Surveys
The NSS unit of the college had a camp in one of the settlement area near the
Malayattoor Reserve Forests: Mulamkuzhi, near Illithode is in the Malayattoor Forest Area
very close to (10kms) the Malayattoor Church. About hundred girls of the National Service
Schemme units of the college under the leadership of the programme Officers
Dr. Salim
Varghese and Mrs. Saly Thomas participated in the camp. Ms. Sanjana Susan Jacob II BSC
Zoology and Ms. Ranjini George III BCom were the Volunteer Secretaries. The project was to
build rural village road, to conduct a socio economic survey of the settlers in the area
and to hike on the Illithodu - Bhoothathankettu trail through the forest and teak
plantation of the Kerala State Forest Department. The District Panchayath, Block Panchayat
and Village Panchayat - civil local government all offered full support along with
the local settlers of the area.

One of the papers written by Dr. Rajan Varughese, Principal of the College, on quality
higher education got published in the 'University News,' a weekly publication of the
Association of Indian Universities. You can find it in Vol. 39 No.35 August 27 - September
2 issue, on pages 4-6. The title of the paper is, "Quality in Higher Education
through Academic Autonomy" title. (Text of the paper is available on request in the
digital form.)
Dr. Rajan Varughese Delivers
a Series of Lectures in Thirupati
Dr. Rajan Varughese, Principal of the College, delivered a series of lectures at the
Academic Staff College of the S.V.University, Thirupathi, Andhra Pradesh on 18 and 19
September, 2001. The talk was aimed to motivate the teachers for the institution
development, the accreditation and assessment of higher educational institutions and on
winning postures in the work place situations.
College Students' Union Donates
Over 1 Lakh
The College Students' union collected and contributed over Rs. 1,00,000 (one lakh) as
contribution to the Canteen Building Construction Fund. WOW! Thank you!
College Modernization Update
The work on the eastern wing to house Botany Lab and the Library and class rooms is now
complete and furnishing of the same is in progress to shift the library to the new
premises.

Prof. Dr. P. P. Ravindran, Prof. of English, School of Letters, M. G.
University and Member, Syndicate and Dr.Sudhakaran, Prof. of Bio Chemistry, Dept. of Bio
Chemistry, University of Kerala visited the college on 12 October, 2001. This is for the
inspection of facilities for the starting of an Off Campus Centre of the School of
Distance Education, M.G.University in the College. The Centre has proposed to offer two
undergraduate courses and one postgraduate course. The courses are:

Library Renovation News
Work on modernizing and moving of the library to its new quarters is in full swing. The
building construction is now completed. The move of the library from the old premises is
in progress. We hope to complete the physical move by September, 2001.
The Ernakulam Centre of the Sevika Sangham (Women) of the Mar Thoma Church started
raising a generous fund for the library development of the college amounting to over Rs.1
lakhs.
We need your generous help in the form of cash or books for transforming our library to
modern age. The library development project is estimated to cost about Rs.10 lakhs for
books, equipment and for library management software with automated set up in the library
and internet connections for making it a virtual library.

Onam season was celebrated in advance on 24-August-2001 at the College.
College Manager Inaugurates
New Course
Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Episcopa, manager of the college, inaugurated the
new B.Sc. Physics Couse with Applied Electronics as Vocational component on 24 August,
2001. Thirumeni also blessed the starting of the Western wing of the second floor of the
main building of the college with a prayer.

Koorilos Thirumeni Releases
The College Magazine
Rt.Rev.Euyakim Mar Koorilos Thirumeni released the college magazine (Annual 2000 - 2001)
on August 16, 2001. Thirumeni is the diocesian episcopa for the Mar Thoma Churches in
North America from October, 2001. Thirumeni also addressed the staff and students during
his visit to the College.

Mrs.Lisy Cherian, Head of the Department of Mathematics is undergoing the Pre
Commission Training Cours at NCC Officer Training College at Gwallior. The course is for
three months. She is expected to be back in the college by the last week of September, 01.
Miss.Sheeja T K (first ranker for MSc from UCCollege and an alumni of Mar Thoma College
for Women) and Miss.Manju G. (an alumni of Mar Thoma College for Women) have joined as FIP
substitute Lecturer and Guest Lecturer respectively in the Department of Mathematics.
Mrs.Annie Kurian of the Department of Maths and Mrs.Gigi George of the Department of
Maths have proceeded on study leave as UGC Teacher Fellows to do M.Phil and Ph.D
respectively.
Mr. A. Ashraf is the new guest lecturer in History. Mr. S. Sudin is joining as
substitute FIP lecturer in Mathematics.

Update
The Governing Council resolved to complete
the construction of the western wing of the college building. This wing, when built, will

Dr. Jacob Mathew, Webmaster, Visits
the College
Dr. Jacob Mathew, Web Master to the college
has visited the college on April 9 and 10, 2001. Dr. Mathew is the President/Founder of
ICBS, Inc. (USA) and the webmaster/co-founder of www.holisticonline.com, a website for
health that is the recipient of several awards and is now ranked as one of the top 5
websites for health on the internet with more than 1.5 million visitors. Dr. Mathew is a
world renowned expert on eCommerce and holistic medicine. He has met with several members
of the faculty and talked about the importance of inspiring students to pursue their
dreams and to strengthen the concept of team work rather than competition as is practiced
now in our educational institutions. The future belongs to the team-player, according to
Dr. Mathew and not to the solo player.
While at the college, Dr. Mathew visited
the library, IIeLT as well as the computer center. He was very impressed with the quality
of the work going on at the college and the dedication exhibited by the faculty. He has
promised to acquire and send some books for the college library.

With the click of a mouse, Most Rev. Dr.
Philipose Mar Chrysostum, Metropolitan of the Mar Thoma Church, brought the college to the
information age.Thirumeni inaugurated the website for the college and our entry into
the Internet era. Thirumeni was well pleased with this giant step undertaken by the
college and noted the fulfillment of the dreams of a number of leaders of the college,
especially Principal Dr. Rajan Varughese. The website allows improved communication with
the students, faculty, staff, and alumni and well-wishers of the college. It allows anyone
with access to the Internet to send message to the college by the click of a mouse. |

Lecture on 'Stakeholders in
Higher Education' on February
27, 2001 in the College. Dr.Cyriac Thomas hon'ble Vice Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi
University gave the memorial lecture. Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius Episcopa, the
Manager of the college, presided at the function. Mr.A.A.Ithapiri,
brother of late Very Rev.A. A. Pylee also spoke.
History Department Organizes Coin and Stamp

The college History department organized an exhibition of
coins, Stamps and Old Stamp Papers on the occasion of the A. A. Pylee Memorial Lecture.

The Fund collection for the Bi-decennial projects
and Bi-decennial Celebrations was inaugurated by the Mar Thoma Metropolitan by giving the
